Following are some trends that outline what buyers are paying attention to this year and are useful to keep in mind when shopping for inventory.

1. Eco-Friendly Toys

“Green” is IN… it is everywhere and toys are no exception! Toys that are environmentally friendly are expected to be very popular this year.

2. Budget Friendly

The economy is all the talk – but that doesn’t mean parents aren’t going to be buying toys for their kids this Christmas. Retailers are already gearing up to offer some great prices on their toys this year.

3. Realistic Toys

I think it started with Baby Alive years ago… but it has become a huge trend these past few years and looks like it will continue. These are toys that respond to touch and interact with the child somehow.

4. Classic toys

5. Movies

How are your eBay auctions going?

I've been hearing that some sellers are really struggling... I hope that isn't you! But, if it is (and even if your auctions are doing well in this lovely economy)... I have a gift for you.

Every week I poke around on eBay and look for used toys that are selling well on eBay... Combining this research with my experience at garage sales, I put together a weekly list for MyToyGuide subscribers.

This list has at least 25 used toy items that are currently selling on eBay... PLUS, I include a tip for how much I would pay for the item if I were to find it at a thrift shop or garage sale. I am always amazed at the huge profit margin I see with used toys on eBay... seriously - you can buy a toy for $5 and turn it around for well over 100% profit (I'm talking AFTER eBay and paypal fees!)

Here are a couple of things I found that are in the most recent MyToyGuide list...

USED piece of dollhouse furniture for $36! You can find this for less than $5 at garage sales or thrift shops if you know to look for them!... consider that profit margin. If you paid $10 to list and cover your inventory and fees - your profit is an easy $16 just for this one little toy.

How about these...
Did you know that the Toy Story DVD's for Toy Story 1 and Toy Story 2 - USED - recently sold for over $55? You could pick these up at a garage sale for $15-20 for the set -- if you knew to look for them.

After all which would YOU pick? Easy fixes or proven strategies?

Now you might say “proven strategies”, but their is usually some work or effort involved with them.

That’s why DESPITE KNOWING that proven strategies are what people need, the very same people will pay for and go after trying to find easy fixes again and again without paying to learn what are proven strategies.

Having No Strategy.

What is your strategy in life? Do you have one?

If you have an online business what is your strategy for your online business? Do you have one?

Think about this? Why do banks ask people to complete business plans with everything meticulously detailed?

From the marketing plan, through to the budgeting, through to the cashflow and profit and loss forecasts?

Just to make life more difficult?

No, because they know that with a strategy or plan in place there is far more chance of achieving your objectives.

Most people particularly people looking to create an online income have no strategy whatsoever.

They go day to day, looking for the next best thing to promise them instant online success, or the next hot thing to come out to try and promote.

There is of course nothing wrong with wanting to promote the next hot thing that comes out, but is that part of your strategy?

And what else does your strategy for online success include?

Do you have a branding strategy in place?

How you are going to brand yourself or your product?

Do you have a traffic strategy in place? How you are going to get and keep a constant flow of traffic coming to your website?

Any task, or venture you undertake, if you want to complete it successfully, take however long it takes, a day, a week or even a month to put all the strategies in place and to define them as meticulously as you can, so that you have a better chance of achieving that success.

No one has exclusivity on knowledge. Pride is and has always been man’s biggest downfall.

If you are not good with talking with people in a social gathering, and you want to be… find out the strategies of how to develop that skill from someone who is proficient at it.

If you want to learn to drive… you’d go to a driving instructor right?

Why then when it comes to learning strategies that will transform our lives are we so against investing in our most valuable asset? Ourselves?

Simply, because quite often, we think we know it all.

Successful people recognise the importance of learning from others.

Professional singers hire and pay professional singing coaches.

Why? They’re already stars and can sing right?

Professional football clubs hire and pay coaches to train the players.

Why? The players already know the game so why do they need a coach?

Gymnasts, tennis players, people in business and multi-millionaires all GET it! They know that despite how much they know, someone who can always teach them or help them to know things they don’t know or help them to improve and successfully implement the things they DO know.

World Champion boxers… have trainers don’t they?

Why? They’re already knocking the lights out of people in the ring, what can old frail men teach them about fighting?

They KNOW that no matter what they do know there is always room for learning strategies or implementing strategies or even perfecting strategies that they an learn from somoene else.

That’s what makes winners. They aren’t afraid of investing in the proven strategies of others to improve their own.

So there is a key difference in attitude and thinking between the successful and the none successful.

7 Ways To Get Subscribers On eBay

1. Include a signature file on every email you send to buyers explaining your newsletter. If you offer a free report mention it's benefits. If you send invoices through eBay use the notes to buyer section.

2. Insert a note into every package you ship explaining your newsletter.

3. Use your eBay me page. I offer a free report on my me page and then promote my newsletter in the free report.

a. Me page explains basic value of free report then links to outside page with additional report benefits and opt in form or download link.

b. EBay rules say you cannot use sales language or link to a page with items for sale on your me page.

c. Test asking for sign up before giving away report. I give my reports away first because I'm only interested in readers who value my information.

4. Divert auction viewers to your me page. Two ways to do this:

a. Put a mention of the free report in your auction listing with a link to your me page. No sales language - "a free gift just for looking at my auction." This works best at the top of your auction.

b. Add your current listings to your me page and then put a link in your auctions saying "see my other auctions to save on shipping." There is a command you can use when building your me page that will automatically insert your current auctions. The free report ALWAYS goes at the top of the page, the listings go below.

5. Create products to sell on eBay attractive to your prospects.

a. We used to use ebooks and PDF transcripts, but eBay no longer allows the sale of these items. Now we use small printed booklets and CDs. Price these items so you brake even or make a small profit. Videos will also work, but are more expensive so start with a booklet or audio interview.

b. Make sure these auctions also include the diversion tactics and your me page is set up so you get opt ins from people who don't buy.

c. Mention your newsletter within the product and include a separate sheet of colored paper with the benefits of subscribing on it. Keep mentions within audio and video products evergreen.

6. Use eBay classified ads. For $9.97 a month you can run classified ads in the everything else category on eBay. Your ad can have a link to a webpage.

a. These don't work well, but they are cheap so they are worth testing. If you're selling dog training information, they surely won't work. If you're in a biz opp type niche, they might work.

b. Your classified ad has a compelling title, and then lists the major benefits of your newsletter. Then there is a link to your sign up page where you list the major benefits again along with minor benefits and privacy/unsubscribe policies.

c. You can also use classified ads to promote ebooks. In this case you sell the ebook in the ad, then link to a simple payment page. (Directly to paypal?)

d. If you're using somewhat desirable keywords in your title, the Home Page Featured option ($179.95) will get you a good ranking on Google for the phrase. It's only temporary though. Don't test this option until you know your classified ad is working without it.

e. Something to test - put a newsletter article on eBay as a classified ad. At the top and bottom of the article explain it's a sample of your weekly newsletter and provide a link to your opt in page.

7. If you have an affiliate program, provide your affiliates with items they can use to promote you in the course of their eBay sales. They get commissions, you get new readers and sales.

a. Signature files - Many of my affiliates use the quiz teaser. (See below.)

b. Package inserts.

c. Brandable reports for me page - I have a me page generator on my site that allows affiliates to easily give away my eBay Buyers guide. The guides have affiliate links within them, and are hosted on my site. No Web skills are needed.

Summary Here: Combine the above tactics. These are in the order of productivity and ease of set up so you can just work down the list. As you get farther down the list, you'll get more and more subscribers every week.

Twitter. You either get it ... or you don't.

Most people don't get it right away. Many try it and then leave scratching their head. Then they hear people talking about it again and they come back and try it again... and THEN they get it. That's when I got it.

What is Twitter? (http://www.twitter.com) Twitter is where you can share your thoughts in 140 characters or less with the world (or at least with those following you). The official definition on their site is - Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

Oh yeah, Twitter is free!

If you haven't signed up for Twitter. Maybe it's time you give it a go? If nothing else...perhaps you should sign up to secure your eBay seller's name or your real name before someone else gets it. Yes, people will sign up and claim other people's names if they think they can somehow gain from it. Either by getting people to "follow" them thinking they are someone else, or to grab it up hoping to "sell" access to it later to the person who owns the name.

Some people have a few followers. They communicate with their family or their friends. Some people have hundreds, some even thousands. Some of the really big boys, have tens of thousands! Many people use it as a business tool. Some to grow their business, some to cultivate the contacts they already have. Some employers communicate with their employees via Twitter, some are allowing their employees to Twitter with each other and the outside world.

There are so many people Twittering that many have created outside applications that work with Twitter... to help you Twitter more efficiently, or just so that you can have more fun Twittering. I've inluded a few that I use at the end of this article. Search Twitter in Google and you'll find even more.

You can learn alot by Twittering. During the recent tropical storm Fay, someone at the local news was sending out Tweets anytime there was breaking news relating to Fay. I often knew before other people knew. I get regular breaking news from a local TV station, I get the daily weather, I get national breaking news as it happens.

I am notified when my favorite bloggers update. I learn from the discussions that go on between other Internet Marketers. I find out about impromptu chats or video sessions I can take part in. I sometimes just read an enlightening quote or a funny joke. I may be presented with the opportunity to pray for someone or I might just hear what a friend is having for dinner or that another friend is having a profitable day.

Do you sell on eBay? If so, you can use Twitter to notify your customers of new listings, special deals or just share some news with them!

When I update my blog, the people who follow me on Twitter are notified right away. Sometimes, I use my mobile phone and send images to my Twitter account. Sometimes I send short 12 sec video clips. Sometimes I Twitter on the go, sometimes I twitter while I'm working and sometimes I Twitter because I'm bored.

Sometimes I share thoughts related to online marketing, sometimes I share my thoughts on life. Occasionally, I may share religious or political thoughts. But mostly, I just share what I'm doing at the time... which, in all honestly, is sometimes just plain boring!

eBay Reduces Fixed Price Listing Fees 70%

eBay supports sellers with 70 percent reduction in fixed price listing fee.

Starting Sept. 16, we are dramatically reducing up-front risk for sellers of Buy It Now™ fixed price items by lowering our listing (insertion) fee to 35 cents – our most competitive pricing ever. For more information on Basic Fee Changes, please click here.
Listing duration for Buy It Now™ fixed price items will be extended to 30 days (up from seven), saving sellers time and money.
In the extremely competitive media categories (books, movies, music, games), we are further lowering listing fees on Buy It Now™ fixed priced items to 15 cents (5 cents for catalog-based listings).
We are shifting fees to the back end with final value fees, which sellers only pay if they’re successful. However, we are reducing final value fees for consumer electronics, cameras and computers, which are among the most competitive categories on the web.

Buyers will find more bargains faster through a streamlined shopping experience and improved search.

Starting Sept. 16, buyers will be able to spot bargains faster through our improved search function that serves up auctions and fixed-price items in a streamlined view.
“Ending soonest” remains a key factor in search results for auctions items. So if a seller’s item is in auction format, the item will at some point come up in search results. In Best Match – eBay’s default sort method – there are many different weights which determine the sort order. On fixed-price items the most important determinants are DSRs and item relevance.

We’re encouraging sellers to offer free or reasonable shipping.

To lower shipping costs across the site we’re establishing reasonable shipping & handling limits in one of our biggest categories — media (books, movies, music & video games). This means that sellers must offer one domestic shipping option that’s under the limit or opt to use the eBay shipping calculator.
This holiday season, eBay is also providing incentives to offer free shipping, including increased exposure in search and other discounts. PowerSellers can receive double their final value fee discounts — up to a 40 percent savings on their final value fees.

Paying on eBay will be faster and more reliable than ever.

Starting this fall, we’re moving to a fully electronic checkout process that’s faster and more reliable for buyers and sellers. As part of this move, checks and money orders will no longer be accepted on eBay as of October 2008, although buyers can still use these payment methods for item pick-up, at the seller’s discretion.
It’s clear why we need to make this change. Today, items paid with check or money order are 80 percent more likely to result in a customer complaint than those paid with credit card or PayPal. Also, buyers who pay with check or money order are twice as likely to leave negative feedback than those who pay with electronic methods. So starting in late October 2008, we are moving to 100 percent electronic payments.
This means that sellers will still be able to offer credit card payments through their own merchant accounts, and payments through ProPay and/or PayPal, with all payment methods integrated into the checkout process on eBay. And remember, for those buyers and sellers who use PayPal, we’re backing every transaction with our buyer and seller guarantee.

Stomach turning warning for my readers...

I received a disturbing email this week from someone I regularly recommend to you.

Leo Quinn has been a personal finance educator since 1997.

One of his readers is now $10,000+ deeper in debt because she sought help from one of the big names in the "get out of debt" business. (ironic, I know)

Leo wants to get the word out so others don't fall for the same sleazy tactics.

Sadly this gentleman's program is sold by probably the biggest and oldest self-development company in the country.

Without naming names here is what you should be wary of...

They advertise a lot on radio.
They encourage you to call for a free CD.
The program sells for $99 or so.
They then will try to sell you on their coaching program.

Here is the disturbing part...from the email Leo received...

"They sold me the coaching program before I even received the ($99) materials. There are three levels, 1 year for $14,955, 9 months for $13,195, 6 months for $11,435 and 3 months for $7095. They sell you whatever will fit on your credit cards, or they will finance it, if you qualify. I ended up with a 3 month program for $7095, which (saleperson) had figured out and split up on the available balances on three of my credit cards before I could blink, let alone think."

What particularly disgusts me about this is that they survey you about the amount of debt AND how much room you have on your credit cards and push you toward the "level" you can "afford".

There is no way they can justify making people go $7095+ deeper into debt for "get out of debt" coaching.

So let this message be a warning to you and feel free to forward it to all your friends and relatives.

Leo suggests if you should ever get scammed out of a large sum of money like this, immediately call your credit card company and have them reverse the charges.

Some states have laws about "cooling off periods" after signing contracts. Look into that as well.

(...these are all terms I've read from people who attended)

First off, let me start by saying that I have only been to one eBay Live and that was in Orlando in 2003. I remember it was crazy crowded, standing room only at many of the classes, lots of exhibitors, sellers, buyers and eBay employees. It was exciting, entertaining, informative, educational, exhausting and fun.

I've tried to find statistics for each year, but I've been able to come up with solid numbers to share with you. There were 10,000 people there in 2003. From what I understand, each year those numbers have declined. However, from what I can tell from all accounts of this years eBay Live as well as previous years, the numbers were considerably lower. I've read the number of vendors was about half and the number of attendees was at least down about 25-30% (maybe more).

Although I didn't attend the conference, I have been reading all the blog entries, watching the videos, reading the tweets and news articles from everyone from eBay employees, pro-eBayers as well as those who are terribly upset with eBay.... trying to get a feel of what it was like this year.

The truth is, pretty much everything I read has expressed some disappointment in eBay Live 08. Some of what I have read was nothing but negative. Photos and videos showed nearly empty classes, few people on the exhibition floor, reported no lines for registration, etc. When I went in '03, as I said, it was crazy crowded and there were long lines for everything. The vendor floor was always busy and it was hard to get to most of the popular counters. This apparently was not the case this year.

Next years eBay Live 09 was already canceled and it makes me wonder if eBay Live 10 will happen or not.

Where Do I Find Products to Sell? 4 Ways to Locate REAL Wholesale Suppliers

Finding genuine, factory-authorized wholesale suppliers is an absolute must for anyone selling physical products on the Internet. Your e-business will never become truly profitable, if you're sourcing your products from middlemen or fake wholesale sites. But tracking down legitimate wholesale sources will take some legwork on your part.

Talk to the Source
So how do you find suppliers who are the real deal, and avoid worthless posers? You go all the way to the top - of the supply chain that is. One of the most reliable ways to locate factory-authorized wholesalers is to talk to the manufacturer. You can usually find the manufacturer located on the product's serial sticker or in the warranty papers or owner's manual.

Once you find them, just call them up and ask for their sales division. Tell their sales rep that you're a retailer interested in carrying their products, and ask for a list of their authorized wholesale suppliers. The manufacturer knows who their authorized wholesalers are, and they shouldn't have any problem sharing that information with you. When you begin calling the suppliers on that list, you'll have complete confidence that you're talking to real wholesalers.

There's More than One Way...
Of course, there are more streamlined methods for tracking down real wholesale product sources. (Big sigh of relief.)

Wholesale trade shows bring thousands of wholesalers, within a single industry, together under one roof. The larger, more reputable shows vet the suppliers they allow to exhibit, which means you'll only be talking to real wholesalers and manufacturers. Wholesalers also advertise in industry trade publications; you can often find valuable contact info and website addresses intended for retail use only there. Another option is to visit a permanent wholesale mart - these are basically long-standing trade shows; you can find them in most mid-sized to large cities.

A Word of Caution
When you're dealing with trade shows, you need to make sure that they are, in fact, wholesale trade shows. In other words, you want to attend a business to business event, open only to industry insiders. The suppliers you'll find at a public trade expo, such as a car or boat show, are often retailers themselves and are not offering wholesale pricing on their products.

The same holds true for any permanent gift mart or trade mart that admits the general public. Wholesale marts are only open to legal retail businesses, and will require proof before allowing you to register. If you can gain entrance without providing your sales tax ID and legal business name (at a bare minimum), you're not in a wholesale merchandise mart, which means you're not getting wholesale prices.

Legitimate Product Sources
Authentic wholesale suppliers won't come knocking down your door - finding them takes a real, concerted effort. It's not always the most exciting job, but the results are easily worth the work you'll put in. Sourcing your products at true wholesale prices will enable you to effectively compete in the Internet marketplace and make the highest possible profits on every transaction. Fraud Alert!!

Today I discovered two fraudulent checks had been written and cashed on one of my bank accounts. One cleared on the 4/14/2008 written to "DCL-ENV, Inc." for $19.95 and one cleared yesterday 4/22/2008 written to "Three, Inc." for $19.75.

This is on an account I have never written checks on. So I did some research online and found others complaining about this happening to them too. Another name mentioned is "eSafe". It is rumored that GreenZap has something to do with this, but I don't know that for sure.

I would suggest that you keep an eye on your bank account, especially if you've done any business with GreenZap, just in case that is true. I don't remember giving Greenzap my bank info, but I did send them a check and all information needed to print a check and cash it is on any of our check's.

I have to file some paperwork with my bank to dispute the checks. I also have to close my account because they said they can't stop further checks without knowing what check number they'll use. Which seems odd to me since I told them I don't write checks on the account so anything that comes through would be fraudulent.

In any case, I just wanted to give you a "heads up" to watch your bank account.

eBay's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Download Policy

I wasn't able to make eBay's Digital Download Workshop they had last week, but I logged in the next day and read everything posted. What I found was that I was very happy that I didn't login "during" the workshop and expect to get any questions answered. The folks running the workshop were not really "there" for about the first half of the hour. In other words, nothing really worthwhile was said by eBay or questions answered until shortly before the hour workshop was over. There were plenty of questions asked, and people aggravated by the lack of response from eBay reps during the workshop.

Actually, 5 mins into the workshop they said "Griff and Brian are here and we are ready to start the Workshop. We'll address questions as we go but first, we have some information to post." Now, get this... 41 minutes (that's FORTY ONE MINUTES) later they posted the information they mentioned just after the workshop started. That post was titled "Using Classified Ads for Selling Digital Content."

They KNEW what the workshop was going to be about. They KNEW the information they wanted to present. Why didn't they have it typed up so they could just paste it in when the workshop started?

Then, 52 minutes into the 60 minute long workshop they posted more in a post titled "A Digital Content Selling Strategy Example." Then came a few short posts... "Just In Time Printing", "Perceived Value Matters!", "The Content Itself" and "Pricing."

Most of the questions asked by users were answered after the hour was over and the opportunity to interact was over. They did manage to answer some questions, but I wasn't crazy about most of their answers. Some of them were a bit ambiguous to say the least.

The one question I wanted to see them answer was, can you offer a 'complimentary' download after the sale while the customer waits for their digital media to arrive in the mail? Now, mind you, if offered a download in lieu of something mailed and offered it in lieu of paying shipping, many bidders would probably just skip having the digital media mailed to them. So, my question was, if you do this are you breaking the rules?

This is what was said:

You can not use the word "download" in your auction ads or your About me pages.

However, and I quote, "...with regards to sending the content via email attachment POST SALE where you also never mentioned that would (should be "word" not would), as either an option, or courtesy, delivery the content in digital format, then it would be allowed." (spelling, grammar, punctuation errors theirs, not mine)

So, to me that means, "Don't ask, don't tell."

Here is some more of what I learned:

You can sell multiple items from one classified ad, but you can't link to them individually. You can put a phone number or email address in your classified ad though.
Online Memberships CAN be sold via auction if you send a Membership card (or other physical item). If there is no physical item mailed, then it has to be listed via classified ad.
Online graphics can be sold via auction if there has to be discussion over the design. If it's predesigned and they are buying it as it is designed, then it has to be listed as a classified ad.

You might gleam some more information out of the discussion if you read it yourself.

Using Classified Ads for Selling Digital Content

For many sellers, the Classified Ad format is alien territory. eBay created this format a few years ago in order to provide a workable format for sellers of goods and services for which the traditional auction and fixed price formats were not appropriate.

Using the Classified Ad format only for your content listing strategy is probably not a wise idea. CA format will work best in tandem with a wider range of content listing options.

Selling digital content on various physical media
Using solid media like an optical disk allows a seller to continue selling their digital content in categories directly related to the topic or subject of the content. Many sellers are now listing the digital content on CD or DVD; a viable solution to policy compliance.

However, The new policy also presents intriguing marketing opportunities for the enterprising seller of digital content to add value to their content by offering it on media that can be used for other purpose. For example, offering one or more eBooks or templates on a USB flash drive, SD, or Compact Flash memory card. Currently, low capacity USB flash drives (128 or 256MB) can be purchased from on and offline wholesale and retail outlets for reasonable prices. In addition, USB drives can be branded with your eBay Store name, your logo or your domain name.

Although they cost more than low capacity USB drives, SC and Compact Flash memory cards serve an extremely useful double duty. Not only can use them for packaging your digital content, your buyers can also use them in their cell phones, laptops and digital cameras.

USB drives and memory cards also allow for cross category listing and promotion. For example, a 1GB SC card containing your selection of eBooks, templates or plans can be listed in the following categories along with many of their sub categories:

* Books
* Cameras & Photos
* Cell Phones & PDAs
* Computers & Networking
* Consumer Electronics

A Digital Content Selling Strategy Example

A good selling strategy should utilize as many listing options as possible. Let’s use the example of a seller of eBooks. (the following assumes the seller has an eBay Store to help cross promote all of their content listings with their non content listings).

1. First, list out the catalog of your eBooks and decide how you want to package them, either as single offerings, collections or both.

2. Then list out the various delivery methods at your disposal on eBay:

Classified Ads (for purely digital downloads)
CD or DVD
USB Flash Drives
Memory Cards
And don’t forget the tried and true, Bound Paper (an actual book!)

3. List out the relevant categories in which your items will fit. If your eBook is a “how to sell on eBay,” on CD and a Flash Drive, the following might be on your list:

Books
Everything Else > Information Products (auction or fixed price format)
Everything Else > Information Products (Classified Ad format)
Computers & Networking
Consumer Electronics

4. Decide how to package your content for each of the options (media type and category). Keep in mind that you will cross promote all of the content listings in your eBay Store.
Other points to keep in mind:

5. Use appropriate, relevant keywords in your listing titles. For example, for listings of content on CD, make sure that the title of the content and the media type are included in your title (follow the usual guidelines for effective titles: only keywords, no punctuation, no modifiers like adverbs or adjectives.) For example, content on CD:

If your eBook title has a subtitle, consider placing it as marketing in the Sub Title” area of the listing.

Once you have planned out your complete packaging, format and listing strategy, you can start listing the items on eBay and, by using your eBay Store Cross Promotional boxes, indicate which of your content items promotions (up to 12 per listing) will appear at the bottom of all your listings. Just In Time Printing

Finally, don’t discount the old tried and true printed book method of delivery. As the success of on and offline bookstores like Borders, Barnes and Noble, Amazon and of course, eBay’s own Half.com clearly show us, bound printed on paper books still have a huge audience of eager buyers. There are many self-publishing options available to neophyte authors, especially those authors for whom finding an agent or old world publisher is not a viable option. Search the internet for “self publishing” to discover the options available. Many self publishing businesses offer authors a “print on demand” service which could very easily tie into an eBay listing strategy.

Perceived Value Matters!

I suspected that a few of you would balk at the idea of spending more to promote your content items on eBay. Let me tell you why increasing the value of your items may actually help, not hurt, your content sales.

Adding value to your content will set your listings apart from your competition. To my eye, one of more distressing aspects of the growing trend in digital content is the “sameness” that permeates this particular category of listings. There are so many titles like “How to sell on eBay,” “How to Make Millions on eBay,” “Needlework Patterns,” etc that it is difficult for buyers to differentiate between content listings.

Let’s explore the various ways a seller of self-created content can stand out from the crowd:

The Content Itself

Considering creating an “eBay How To” eBook or compile a collection of your own needlework or embroidery patterns or a collection of templates (the type of content doesn't matter here. All types of content will benefit from these tips)? Fantastic! Keep in mind that these are very crowded fields at the moment (it’s almost seems like every full time seller is writing a “how to” eBook of some sort). Before you begin, ask yourself: what is my angle? What is it about my content that is different, more valuable than the existing content? Maybe it’s your humorous writing style that sets your ebook apart. Or maybe you actually have strategies, tips and tricks that have never been presented. Maybe your ebook is rich in helpful graphics or is laid out like a school text books with q and a tests at the end of each chapter.

Maybe your “how to” ebook comes in audio format as well. (Why are there not more of these?)
If you cannot come up with a unique angle for your content topic, maybe you should consider a different topic. What are your other fields of expertise? Are you a fly tying expert? An expert watercolorist? A paint decorator? There aren’t too many ebooks on these subjects. The field beyond “How to [fill in the blank] on eBay” is wide open.

Branding

No matter what media, format or category, make sure that your content packaging and presentation is consistent and identifiable as your brand. Many successful content sellers create a graphic for their content that shows it as a hard or soft cover book. You may need to hire a graphic designer to do the initial work for you but again, anything you can do to set your content apart from your competition provides value to your potential buyers. Your mantra should always be, “I must set my content apart from the pack.”

Pricing

This is touchy area for many sellers. No one (including me) wants to dictate the value of self-created content as indicated by the price the seller places on their own content. But consider: you spend time and effort putting together an ebook on a topic. You are proud of your work. You consider it to be of great potential value and use to your readers. You have followed all of the above suggestions and have created a workable listing and marketing promotion strategy.

Then you price the content out at .99

Remember, for the most part, buyers believe that value is best indicated by price. Sure, every buyer wants a good deal, a bargain. No buyer wants to spend more than an item is worth. However, there is a price point for every item – not always obvious and not always easy to determine – below which the buyer stops considering the item as a bargain and starts viewing the item as “cheap” with all the word’s negative connotations.

Don’t demean your content’s value by a too-cheap price. Part of your differentiation strategy has to be pricing. Experiment with different price points and take into consideration the results of your extensive research into existing pricing. Many sellers know this from experience but the lowest priced item in a category is not always the best seller.

Not All Wholesalers are Created Equally!!

Okay, I debated whether or not I was going to share this with you because, to be honest, I'm embarrassed and I feel stupid!

I received an email that said "Digital Camera Blowout Sale - 8-12 Brand New Digital Camera Lot - $149.00"

It sounded good! At most I'd spend $18.63 if I only got 8 and $12.42 if I got 12. I figured no matter what I got, surely I'd be able to turn a profit and make a few bucks. After all, at that price, how could I not make a profit?

I was wrong! When the cameras arrived and I tore into the box, hopeful that maybe I actually got a good deal, I was sorely disappointed. I immediately recognized the camera as a cheesy camera I had purchased many YEARS back at Walmart for $19.95 and I was unhappy with it then. I did a search on eBay and immediately found the exact same cameras listed for a Buy-It-Now price of $9.95 and selling even cheaper on auction type listings. No matter how I looked at it, I had just thrown my money away. Sure, I could list them like I saw some other people listing them with an outrageous amount for shipping, trying to recoup my investment. But, to be honest, I wouldn't give one of these cameras away to anyone but maybe a little kid, and even then, I'd feel it necessary to apologize while doing so.

I should have known better but it sounded good AND I figured this would give me the opportunity to check out this supposed "Wholesaler" and so I could tell you about it. I really hoped to be able to tell you GOOD things about my experience. I was hoping to be able to definitively tell you there are good wholesalers out there. But, looking back, I should have known. The website is very amateur and looks like it was designed by a kid. That should have told me something. However, a website can be beautifully designed and well maintained and still offer bad "wholesale" deals.

I did contact the "Wholesaler" and let him know how disappointed I was. I asked to return them and I was told that I would have to pay a 35% restocking fee to do so... His customer service skills were also lacking to say the least. So, after some thought, I went through their support page again and asked for an RMA. I did this 3 times, even willing to pay their restocking fee just so as not to lose as much money. All 3 times, my support tickets were ignored.

That's why I'm here to tell you, while you may have to lose some money trying to find good "wholesalers" on your own... you don't really have to. Fortunately, I only lost $150 (plus shipping) but I learned a valuable lesson that I can pass on to you.

Don't throw your money away like I did! If you want to find true wholesalers and dropshippers, there is only ONE Source and that's Worldwide Brands. Yes, there is a cost involved in gaining access to the list, but it's well worth the price of admission!

Digital Downloads on eBay to Be Restricted

It appears that eBay is going to be instituting a new rule effective March 31st that will affect anyone who sells anything that can be digitally downloaded. All digital downloads will have to be listed using the Classified Ads format. eBay's reason for this is because digital goods are often reproduced at very little or no cost to the seller and this creates the potential for Feedback manipulation.

Using Classified Ads, sellers get 30 day listings at a fixed price. This solution will allow us to continue to sell our downloadable ebooks on eBay, but no feedback will be able to be exchanged.

I haven't used Classified Ads yet although I've heard of people getting great lead generation by using them. I tried to list my first item in Classified Ad format a couple of weeks ago and had a problem getting approved by eBay. The system told me I was eligible at the same time it told me I wasn't. (I should be, I met all the requirements) Customer Service told me they were dealing with a problem so perhaps it had something to do with them switching over to the new rules. I'll see what happens when I go to list something in Classified Ads again.

Of course, if you want to continue to sell your eBooks on eBay without using the Classified Ads section, then you will need to offer them on CD's or diskettes and actually mail them to your buyers. (does anyone use diskettes anymore?!)

I'd love to hear any of your comments about your experiences with Classified Ads.
